F4U CORSAIR "DAISY JUNE"
Development of the Corsair began in 1938, when the
US Navy issued a request for a new single-seat carrier-based fighter. The
Chance-Vought company won the contract with their unique, gull-winged airframe
pulled by the largest engine then available. The wing design was necessitated by
the tall landing gear which was, in turn, necessitated by the huge propeller
required to propel the plane at the desired high speeds.

P-51D MUSTANG
USAF 336TH Fighter Squadron "Donald Duck"
- Molded plastic construction.
- Realistic panel lines, antennas, access panels and
surface details.
- Pad printed markings and placards that won't fade or
peel llike decals.
- Opening canopies, revealing detailed cockpit interiors.
- Selected moveable control surfaces.
Functional extending/retracting landing gear.
- Authentic detachable ordnance loads.
- Wings and tail surfaces need to be attached. No glueing
or painting.
The P51 is the most famous of the American
"big three" from WWII: those being the P47, P38, and P51. It
seems ironic that this fighter is so closely associated with
American air power in the second world war; as it's design
specifications and requirements were driven entirely by the
RAF in the form of an order from the British Purchasing
Commission.

"Cat Mouth"

Marianas Turkey Shoot
This aircraft represents
the F6F-3 "Cat Mouth", VF-27 stationed with USS Princenton.
The Grumman F6F Hellcat was a fighter plane descended from
the earlier F4F Wildcat, but was a completely new design
sharing only a familial resemblance to the Wildcat. Some
tagged it as "Wildcat's big brother". The Hellcat proved to
be the most successful aircraft in naval history, destroying
5,163 aircraft in service with the US Navy and US Marine
Corps, plus 52 with the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm during
World War II. Postwar, the Hellcat aircraft was rapidly
phased out of frontline service, finally retiring in 1954 as
a night-fighter in composite squadrons. |
